Turano History

Mariano Turano came to the United States from Calabria, Italy, with one purpose in mind; to build a better life for his family. When he bought a small bake shop on the westside of Chicago, he saw his opportunity to do just that. There he focused on making the same old-fashioned Italian Round Bread he baked in Italy. Soon this little Italian bake shop was making a big impression in surrounding neighborhoods.

The popularity of Mariano’s old-world bread motivated his brothers, Carmen and Eugenio, to partner with him and form Campagna Turano Bakery in Berwyn IL. The family’s undeniable talent for bread baking would soon make them one of the most popular Italian bakeries in the Chicagoland area. The family’s collaboration inspired the introduction of new items, such as French and Vienna breads, as well as Mamma Susi’s Pizza, a local favorite made by Mariano’s wife, Assunta. Before long, Turano’s authentic Italian bread and baked goods made it into local grocery stores and restaurants.

Mariano’s sons, Renato, Umberto and Giancarlo, assisted their father every step of the way. They played a vital role in developing the business, introducing new varieties, engineering baking lines, and exploring new customer relationships, officially becoming Turano Baking Company. Under their leadership, what started out as a small bake shop has expanded into five state-of-the-art baking facilities, in Berwyn IL, Bolingbrook IL, Villa Rica GA, Orlando, FL and Henderson NV. The Turano family and dedicated employees continue to preserve the tradition, techniques, imagination and innovation passed down by Mariano.
